“What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all; how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” Romans 8:31-32
The words “If God is for us, who can be against us?” should be ever before us as we step into the new day that is full of weeds. Those words should be on our bathroom mirror, above the coffee maker, on the refrigerator door and stuck to that box of Krispy Kreme donuts that is really just a box of glazed weeds. Like you and me, these four Haitian children open the door to our world and find weeds along our pathway trying to choke the truth out of our day and tempt us that we are alone and without Hope. Our Triune God is on our side. He is the ultimate weed killer and since He is on our side, who can possibly stand against us. I am closing with the words from the hymn ‘If God had not been on our side’ that were written by Martin Luther in 1524.
“If God had not been on our side and had not come to aid us, the foes with all their power and pride would surely have dismayed us; for we, His flock, would have to fear the threat of men both far and near who rise in might against us. Their furious wrath, did God permit, would surely have consumed us and as a deep and yawning pit with life and limb entombed us. Like men o'er whom dark waters roll their wrath would have engulfed our soul and, like a flood, o'erwhelmed us. Blest be the Lord, who foiled their threat that they could not devour us; our souls, like birds, escaped their net, they could not overpower us. The snare is broken; we are free! Our help is ever, Lord, in Thee, Who made’st earth and heaven.”
Dear Heavenly Father, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing where we go but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.
May God be with you…Jay
